Does the oil industry have a future in 2030? The key role in the energy transition

Updated: Jan 26

the oil industry does have a future toward 2030, but not as it was known in the past. Its survival depends on its ability to transform and take an active role in the energy transition, rather than resisting it. Oil will continue to be critical for global energy security, petrochemicals, heavy transportation, and multiple industrial value chains, while renewable energy sources reach the scale and reliability required. At the same time, companies in the sector are expected to lead solutions such as emissions reduction, carbon capture and storage (CCS), digitalization of operations, and integration with clean energy. In this scenario, oil does not disappear; instead, it evolves—shifting from being the center of the energy system to becoming a strategic supporting player in a more diversified, efficient, and sustainable model.
